Origin and History

Cherry, also known as sour cherry, is the name of the fruit of several trees of the genus Prunus, although commercially is exploited a limited number of species. The tree is known as cherry tree or morello cherry tree. While all the cherry trees are in the genus Prunus, belonging to this genus there are other species as the plum tree, the almond tree, the apricot tree or the peach tree as well.

In Spain is distinguished between the "morello cherry" as the fruit of Prunus cerasus and as "cherry" the fruit of the Prunus avium, being in America more common "sour cherry" for the first denomination, and "sweet cherry", for the second. Not to be confused with other species commonly known as cherry, as Capsicum annuum (Mesoamerica), Eucryphia glutinosa (Patagonia), Nothofagus betuloides (Chile) and Nothofagus pumilio (Argentina)
